Grown in the Fujian province of China, this rich smoky tea has a long and rich history. It travelled long distances from China to Russian markets and absorbed the smoky aroma of various campfires along the way. This long overland journey acquired it the epithet “Russian Caravan” and associated its characteristic smokiness with Russian Teas. It even acquired imposing Russian monarchy names like Czar Nikolai or Ekaterina. Lapsang Souchang which literally means “smoky tea” in Cantonese has an instantly recognizable smoky aroma. It undergoes a complex curing process to accentuate its natural smokiness. The tea leaves are withered slightly in bamboo baskets over open pine fires. It is then fermented slightly in long barrels and then dried again in openwork baskets. Lapsang Souchang brews a strong cup of tea with a distinct flavour which is rarely forgotten.
